As with every popular dish, there are several theories about the origin of the pancake. What is known, however, is that the ancient Greeks were already making a similar recipe at least two thousand years ago. These pancakes - called tagenias - spread rapidly throughout Europe, with records of the dish starting in the 1st century, with a recipe very similar to the one we have until today: milk, eggs, flour and water. The Italians dispute these records and claim that the delicacy would have been created in Italy in the 5th century for a religious festival.
